10 Things to Know Before Your First Session at CMA

You have heard so much about our Martial Arts and Fitness classes, and you’re finally ready to give it a go. That’s great! You’ll get to discover more about the workout your friends have been raving about.

Signing up for your session is a big step but rest assured, this can actually be one of the hardest parts! Now you have committed to showing up, there are a few things to know. These tips for your first training session will make things easier.

      1. Eat first (just not too much)
Martial Arts & Fitness classes requires energy! To make the most of your workout, you need to have fuel in the tank. However, if you have a huge meal before you start your training, you’ll find your stomach starts to complain. Have a small, protein-based snack or shake before you get going and you’ll feel better.
      2.  Bring a towel
As the saying goes: No pain, no gain! And this means you’re gonna sweat. Pack your own towel so you don’t feel uncomfortable using one from the gym.
      3. Start slow…
If you go all out straight away, you’ll end up with an injury. Stick close to your Insturctor and they’ll let you know if you’re overdoing it on your first session.
      4. …but don’t be afraid to challenge yourself
With the above being said, don’t hold back too much. Try some things you never thought you would be able to do. You might find you’re not so successful but at least you can set a starting point to work from.
      5. Bring a notepad
One of the key components of Martial Arts & Fitness training is tracking your results. Jotting down your achievements from the get-go will help you chart measurable improvements.
      6. Invest in your clothing and foot hygeine
Most Newbies wear comfortable but tight(ish) clothes so their trainers can see what their body is doing. When you start, you may be happier in something loose, and that’s fine. We go bare feet on the mats, so make sure your toenails are trimmed and tidy – nasty sharp toenails are dangerous.
      7. Do some research
Martial Arts & Fitness classes will introduce you to a whole new set of lingo and it can feel overwhelming at first. Before your first class, Google a few terms to understand what they mean. Pretty soon, you’ll be heading to the Dojang for your classes and chatting about the techniques with everybody else.
      8. Remember, everyone was you once
The most seasoned Martial Artists and Instructors started as newbies with no idea what they were doing. When you enter the gym, you may witness some incredible talent and some inspiring bodies. But rest assured, nothing was achieved overnight! Be motivated by the senior members, not intimidated.
      9. Listen to your trainers
One of the biggest benefits of Martial Arts & Fitness classes here at Canberra Marital Arts is that you have a trainer working with you constantly. Make the most of this by asking for advice and taking cues from your coach. With their advice, you’ll be able to achieve better results, faster.
      10. Bring a smile
This is the big one! Canberra Martial Arts has a huge focus on friendship and FUN. As well as working out, you’re setting yourself up for some life-changing friendships. Get ready to support and be supported while you’re on your amazing fitness journey.

Finally, don’t forget that your first workout is only the beginning. The feeling of being challenged is one you’ll get used to and even look forward to. Pretty soon, you’ll be a Martial Arts expert, encouraging your friends and family to join in the fun!
